Packaging and Reliability

Semiconductor Package and Reliability Datasheet Comparison

How to compare package size, pin compatibility, thermal resistance, MSL, solder profile, qualification grade, lifetime, FIT, and reliability tests.

Why can two packages with the same pin count still differ?

Pin count does not guarantee the same pinout, land pattern, exposed pad, height, thermal path, moisture sensitivity, or assembly process. Package drawings and ordering codes should be checked before treating parts as compatible.

How should reliability values like FIT or lifetime be compared?

Reliability values need model, temperature, voltage, mission profile, confidence level, and qualification context. A lower FIT rate is only meaningful when the assumptions are comparable.

Which assembly specs should be preserved?

Preserve MSL, reflow profile, peak temperature, solderability, package material, lead finish, underfill or board assumptions, and any qualification standard or test method reference.
